Remembering Charlie

Charles O. Johnson

1940-2011

I will never forget how Charlie and Penny supported me when they learned about my volunteer endeavors.  Charlie always lent a helping hand to support American Canyon.  He has left an imprint on our hearts and in this community through all the good work he’s done for us.

Charlie has volunteered with the Police Department, being a constant advocate for the force.  He has served as a Charter Member of Kiwanis and on their Board of Directors, while managing logistics and food for their Crab Feeds every year.

Since the 1990’s Charlie has been a City Planning Commissioner and was their Chairman.  Charlie also served on the Mosquito Abatement Board representing American Canyon’s interests as well as ten years serving Meals on Wheels to support local seniors and homebound individuals.

Anyone in town who’s enjoyed one of Charlie’s countless BBQ dinners has also benefitted from a laugh or heard him tell a joke.  He beamed with pride when he was the town grill master and that is how I will remember Charlie - his wide, proud smile as he serves his friends.

Charlie and Penny Johnson enjoyed twenty-two years of marriage and they have helped shape this town since its inception.  Charlie worked for over thirty years as a Shipfitter on Mare Island.  He embraced anyone with enough gumption to good-naturedly debate issues with him, as I have done.  He was an advocate for freedom and constitutional gun rights, and he tempered his passion to gracefully listen to my concerns about guns.  He knew his mind and he never failed to speak it but he also deeply cared about this community and it showed in his actions.

On behalf of American Canyon – Charlie, I will surely miss you.

Social Media = Free PR Solution?

I’ve decided its time to branch out on behalf of American Canyon LIVE.  There seems to be a lot of activity on the site, www.amcanlive.com, but I’m still hearing that neighbors have not yet heard about it.  Since my budget for the year is $100 of my own money, plus a cool $250 grant from the fine folks at AC Parks and Rec, I don’t have the funds to retain a public relations firm.

Therefore, I’ve expanded my digital horizon to include Facebook, Twitter and this blog.  I hope to keep up to date on it all, plus keep the site going and the calendar as comprehensive as possible.  Perhaps this foray into social media will help more people find American Canyon LIVE.

Want to lend your support?  Here’s how:
